I'm so thrilled to reveal the beautiful new cover to the next book in the The City of Dark Pleasures series, The Amber Columns.

But first a reminder about book I, The Obsidian Stairway:

blurbWhen O’Mara is assigned to report on a new sexual service in the City of Dark Pleasures -- one that has been the subject of much gossip -- she’s not sure what to expect. What she finds there only reminds her of all that has been lost in The Expiation.

She meets Tully -- handsome, attentive, mysterious and unlike any “servant” O’Mara has met in the Pleasures. His extraordinary service is about to allow her to experience a level of intimacy she has only ever imagined.

And now, here's a little synopsis of what's to come in The Amber Columns:

Tully:
Sex is what we sell in the City of Dark Pleasures. To work here you need to sequester your emotions, your humanity, your soul if there’s such a thing. If you don’t you’re in danger of losing it all together, permanently.
For someone like me, my damaged soul is all I have left. I try to slip it off like a coat when I work, and most of the time I can. Most of the time no feelings at all come into what I do. But there are times I weaken, times when patrons get to me either for good or ill. Mostly ill.
Once a woman I met got inside me like no one has. It wasn’t love, but it was as close as I will ever be. O’Mara was her name. O’Mara Tanner. Every morning I read her byline on the Island News Service. She writes about fluff—places to shop, entertainments to see. She wrote about me once. It was all lies, but I don’t hold that against her. Our civilization is built on lies. The brief time we spent together was all lies.
Sometimes I think I would give up everything just to have O’Mara Tanner lie to me again.

O'Mara:
It’s only at night that I’m scared of him. During the day I think about his golden eyes, his warm skin and his velvety voice to the point of distraction. I could lose my job if I don’t get my shit together. A lost job means a lost income. If I can’t pay my rent I could lose my citizen status. And then what? Then I join him, working in the Pleasures?
I could go and see him. I should go and see him. I can find the money somewhere and go and get him to hook me up to that infernal machine of his and lose myself in his beautiful dreamscape. The one in which we are lovers. If I can just spend another moment in that forlorn and hopeless dream I might be able to get him out of my system.
As it is I’ve been masturbating until my fingers ache, and the skin of my clitoris is burning and raw. Whenever I climax I hear his voice, saying my name. Or I say his name.
          “Tully…”
Maybe before the Expiation people knew that the love of a good man was a powerful, devastating intoxicant. It weakens you, distracts you, makes you prone to obsessive thoughts and lost productivity. Maybe that’s why they did it. To increase productivity.
Love must be the most potent force on earth, if it can fuck you up even when you know it’s not real.

Without further ado, here's the lovely new cover:

Here's a video about the Fireworks Novellas

Blurb:

Seattle law student Levi Borovski has been ceremonially dispatched from his family home to “get over himself” as his mother not so politely puts it. For the last year he’s been experimenting with living by orthodox Jewish traditions and it’s driven his liberal secular parents crazy. To make matters worse, the nice Jewish medical student for whom he put in all this effort has just gotten engaged to someone else. Why Levi’s mother thinks spending Mardi Gras in New Orleans will improve his mood is something of a mystery, but at this stage he’s pretty much ready to try anything. So when his frat buddies ditch him to take off on some drug dealer’s riverboat Levi is left to his own devices in the Big Easy, determined, despite everything to let the good times roll.

Charlotte Gibbs doesn’t exactly hate her demeaning job as a lap dancer in the high end French Quarter gentlemen’s club, Objections. It’s good money and the attention she gets from her mostly rich lawyer clientele satisfies her ego enough that her perpetual singlehood no longer feels like a voodoo curse. Tourists can be a pain though, and Mardi Gras week is especially bad. Still, a hard-working girl like Charlotte is entitled to have a little fun sometimes. So when an adorably drunk but sincere West Coast college boy invites her for a drink, Charlotte decides to take a chance.

Neither of this mismatched set of misfits imagines that the magic of Mardi Gras will rub off on them in quite such a sexy, dramatic and life changing way. When the sun comes up on New Orleans will they find a way to make this unexpected magic last?

She tastes like lime and sugar, and her mouth is warm and soft. My cock throbs as I think about what other parts of her might be warm and soft, too. Just when I think I might slide down on the ground with her legs wrapped around me, she pulls back. I sneak a look down at her cleavage which is moving up and down as she breathes heavily.
“So…what’s your hotel like?” She looks back over my shoulder to the hotel a block away.
“It’s nice. Pretty quiet. Quaint, I guess you’d say. It’s decorated with antiques and stuff.”
She looks up at me through her eyelashes, nodding, a twinkle in her eye. “And your room? That’s nice?”
“Yeah, good. It’s like a two-bedroom suite, because I came with two friends. So they let me have the bigger room because I organized the trip. There’s a balcony over Bourbon Street. It’s pretty cool.”
She nods some more, her mouth slowly breaking into a grin.
“Oh God,” I say. “I really suck at this. You’re looking for an invitation, right?”
“Unless you feel strongly about another cocktail.”
“Hell, no.” I grab her hand and we practically run the block and half back to the LaFleur. By the time we get there, we’re out of breath and laughing. And I can’t quite believe what’s happening. I’m glad I didn’t have another cocktail. This is the kind of situation that can go south in about a thousand different ways when too much alcohol in involved.
I sneak a little kiss as I dig the key out of my pocket.
The doorman looks up as we walk in. I wink at him and lead Charlotte to the staircase.
“Boy, you been gone five minutes!” he calls after us.
Charlotte trails her hand along the wooden bannister as we climb up to the second floor. “I’ve walked past this place about a thousand times, and I’ve always wanted to see inside.”
“Is it what you expected?”
“It’s clean,” she says pausing at the top of the stairs to look at a painting of a pirate. “I dunno. I think I expected these places to be like haunted houses or something. All old and dusty.”
I tug her across the landing to the door of our suite. “Not haunted at all. We even have WiFi.” I pause as I unlock and open the door, taking her hand. This whole situation is so crazy and surreal, I need to make sure I don’t epically screw it up. “I want you to know something,” I say. “I’m not one of those guys who thinks that just because a girl comes to your hotel room, it means she agrees to sex.”
Charlotte grins and touches the tip of her nose onto mine. “But I do agree to sex.” She grabs the front of my shirt and pulls me through the door, slamming it behind us.

Release Week Blitz - The Obsidian Stairway

“..a dark and thrilling ride that left me breathless. I cannot wait to see where it goes.”

Bestselling author, AJ Downey

“Follow The Obsidian Stairway into the dark recesses of pleasure and euphoric fantasy!”

Bestselling Author, Titania Ladley

Blurb:

Advisory: The Obsidian Stairway is a dystopian erotic romance with graphic sex and language (18+)

Young journalist O’Mara Tanner ventures into the red light district – The City of Dark Pleasures – to report on a new sexual service that has been the subject of much gossip. But what she finds there only reminds her of all that has been lost in the dark days known as The Expiation.

Tully – handsome, attentive, mysterious – is unlike any “servant” O’Mara has met in the Pleasures. And his extraordinary service is about to allow her to experience a level of intimacy she has only ever imagined .

“Oh Good Lord that was amazing. Truly that was a beautiful, mind numbing work of art. I was curious, aroused and I’m certain you broke my heart a bit. Sincerely one of the best bits of writing I’ve read in some time. I’m sitting here slightly shaken and wondering what is next. That was…..yeah amazing. In a bit when I can breathe right again, I’ll give you a better review but for now I need a minute.”
Author, Kate Benoit

Excerpt:

A few seconds pass while I listen to the low buzz of the tungsten lights and the higher pitched hum of what I assume is the machinery.

“So your service, it’s some kind of machine, right?”

“More or less. Are you ready to try it?” He lays a hand on top of mine. “You don’t need to be scared.”

“I’m not scared,” I lie. “Should I undress?”

“It’s not necessary. You can if you want to.”

I think about that for a moment. The setting is so strange and unsexy. I can’t imagine how anyone would want to undress. There isn’t even a bed. Are we going to have sex on the floor? And when will this machine appear?

“You have questions?” Tully says.

“I have the feeling you’ll say I have to experience it to fully understand.”

He smiles, leaning forward and reaching behind my chair. “I can explain it. But it’s true that your experience will be better if I don’t. Knowing too much interferes with the effect.” When he sits back, he has several wires in his hand, each terminating in a small electrode. As he speaks in a low soothing voice, he attaches the electrodes – one to each temple, one in the center of my forehead, two somewhere in my hair, and one below each ear. “I want you to know that the safe word will work, if you need it. Do you remember it?” I nod as he attaches a final electrode on the back of my neck, just below my hairline.

“Am I having electroshock therapy?” I’m joking. I hope I’m joking.

Tully smiles as he clips a heart rate monitor onto my index finger. “You won’t feel anything.”

“I won’t feel anything? Doesn’t that defeat the whole point of visiting the Pleasures?”

He laughs then, rises from his stool and turns toward the workbench. “Oh, you’ll feel something. Just not at the point of the electrodes.” He sits on another stool, in front of a chipped cathode screen, which comes to glowing green life as he types onto a clacky keyboard. “Sit back and relax. If you lean forward like that, you’re in danger of falling out of the chair.” He spins on his stool, facing me again. He has a small handheld terminal in his hands, a thick coil of wire connecting it to the equipment on the workbench. “Ready?”

I lean back into the chair, resting my head on the soft cushion. “Ready.”

He turns a knob on the handset. There’s a barely perceptible increase in the background hum as Tully stands. I watch him take one graceful step toward me, two, three and then the world goes black.
